Q. How do I know when my transmission needs to be serviced?
A. When the fluid begins to change from a clean red color to a darker color, or
every 20-25 thousand miles.

Q. What causes the transmission fluid to change to a dark brown or a blackish color when it was just changed recently?
A. The reason it changes color so quickly is that the red dye is temperature related, and if your fluid is changing color quickly, then the transmission is overheating for some reason, possibly slippage in the transmission, or lack of lubrication. If you have this problem then it is time to have it checked out.

Q. How do I check the transmission fluid level?
A. Always check the fluid level with the engine running (except Honda), the
transmission in "park" (except Dodge products which should be in neutral with
the emergency brake applied), and with the engine at operating temperature.
Remove the dipstick and wipe with a rag. Insert the stick fully and remove. Look
at both sides of the stick to verify the same indication. Repeat the process.

Q. My transmission is giving me problems. Does that mean I need a new one?
A. Not at all. In many cases an external problem can be repaired.

Q. When my "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on; could this indicate a transmission
problem?

A. Yes it could. Bring the vehicle down to Acadiana Transmission so we
can access the onboard transmission control computer to see if any codes have
been stored in memory that indicate this.

Q. Can other things that are wrong with my car affect my transmission also?

A. Yes, with today's electronic engine components, and transmission parts, there can often be a problem with the electronics in other operating areas of your car that will cause a poor performance in your transmission

Q. What can I do to make my transmission last longer?
A. "Don't ignore it." Check the fluid level and condition periodically, repair
any leaks/problems promptly, service the unit on a regular basis, and add an
auxiliary cooler if the vehicle is used for towing, commercial, or high ambient
temperature climates. Some units should have a shift kit installed. Synthetic
fluid may benefit some applications.
